How often do I need to renew my ICF Coaching Certificate?
The ICF prides itself on being a globally recognised gold-standard for executive coaches. They have an on-going vetting process to ensure you continue to meet the requirements of this position, even after you have passed your initial qualification. This is to guarantee that only the top-level coaches get to retain their certification and provide the highest quality coaching to their clients.
1. So, what are the renewal requirements for ACC and PCC certifications?
Let’s start with ACC renewal requirements. Note: ACC is the entry level coaching qualification and PCC, which we’ll cover later in this blog, is the higher level certification. We recommend our students complete the PCC certification and our programmes meet the requirements for this.
To renew your ACC (Associate Certified Coach) certification, you’ll need to:
Submit the online renewal application and make sure you have all the necessary documentation
Complete at least 40 hours of CCE or Continuing Coach Education. This must be done within 3 years of your initial ACC certification or since your last renewal
2. What does the CCE entail?
You must complete at least 24 CCE hours in Core Competencies, three of which must be in coaching ethics. ICF even offer a complimentary ethics course online to make this easier
The remaining 16 hours can be in Resource Development or Core Competencies
On top of these hours, you must also complete 10 hours of mentor coach training:
This must be with an eligible mentor coach who has completed their ACC renewal at least once if they hold an ACC credential
The mentor coach training must take place over a period of three months or longer
You must complete this for each renewal cycle
There is an admin fee every time you will renew your ACC or PCC credential and you have to do it once every three years.
To renew your PCC (Professional Certified Coach) credential:
Submit your renewal form online, including all the relevant documentation
Complete at least 40 hours of CCE or Continuing Coach Education. This must be done within 3 years of your initial ACC certification or since your last renewal
These hours have the same subject requirements as ACC, but the difference with renewing your PCC credential is in mentor coaching:
You can use up to 10 hours of mentor coaching or up to 10 hours of coaching supervision
These coaching hours can be giving or receiving
They can be used as part of the 40 hours of CCEs and they will count as core competency credits
Or, you can simply complete 40 hours of CCE without any Mentor Coaching, as you only have to do a top-up of Mentor Coaching when renewing the ACC
Please note - you will not have to re-take your ICF credentialing exam when renewing your ACC or PCC certificates
And there you have it – now you know how to prepare yourself in advance for your next credential renewal.
